Checking understanding with Interactive Exercises in online textbooks

How a teacher can instruct learners to complete Interactive Exercises

Siyavula Mathematics and Physical Sciences online textbooks can be used as an additional resource for teaching and learning new concepts. We encourage both learners and teachers to read through our textbooks and immediately check understanding by working through the embedded interactive exercises. All questions from the interactive exercises are marked automatically and feedback is given immediately.

To find interactive exercises on Siyavula textbooks:

  • Select the textbook of your choice on the navigation menu. For example, Mathematics Grade 10
  • Once the textbook opens, select the topic of your choice.

After opening the topic you will see the quick links to interactive exercises. Scroll down to read the content.

After learning the content, learners may scroll down to find the interactive exercises and check their understanding of the content that they have learnt. It is advisable that learner practice meaningfully by:

  • doing the calculations on a paper or workbook, and inputting the final answer on the provided box
  • check the correct way to type the answer by clicking on How should I type my answer?
  • check the Preview whether the answer is typed correctly

  • The platform marks the submitted answer immediately and gives a detailed full solution.
  • When marked correct, the answer is highlighted in green, click Show the full solution to compare your workings with detailed solution.

When marked incorrect, the answer is highlighted in red, and the full solution is provided. Check how you need to correct your workings and how to submit your answer.

Checking the report of Interactive exercises is easy. On the top left, the exercises will indicate the mark received by a tick or x.

The interactive exercises do not allow for practicing with multiple versions of the question. There is no _Try exercise like this _button. However there is a way to assign learners to practice the questions that they struggled with from the interactive exercises. This is through the use of question IDs. The interactive exercises have question IDs that are written as numbers in brackets next to the question number.
