How teachers can assign the baseline assessment

How to view the baseline assessment report

According to CAPS, "Mathematics teachers who might want to establish whether their learners meet the basic skills and knowledge levels required to learn a specific Mathematics topic will use baseline assessment. Knowing learners' level of proficiency in a particular Mathematics topic enables the teacher to plan her/his Mathematics lesson appropriately and to pitch it at the appropriate level. Baseline assessment, as the name suggests, should therefore be administered prior to teaching a particular Mathematics topic. The results of the baseline assessment should not be used for promotion purposes."

Siyavula has created baseline assessments so that teachers can assess their learners' knowledge and skills at the beginning of high school, or at the start of the FET phase.

The baseline assessments that you can find on the Siyavula platform:
  • Grade 8 - 50 questions and can be completed in 1 hour 30 minutes
  • Grade 9 - 50 questions and can be completed in 1 hour
  • Grade 10 - 50 questions and can be completed in 1 hour
  • Grade 11 : Paper 1 - can be completed in 1 hour
  • Grade 11 : Paper 2 - can be completed in 1 hour

**The rules for the assessments are as follows: **

  • Each question is marked automatically
  • Learners will be allowed to complete each question once. There is no option to "Try an exercise like this again"
  • The full solution is turned off
  • Learners can see their mark when the assessment is completed.

How teachers can assign the baseline assessment

There are two ways that teachers can assign the baseline assessment for completion by the learners:

  • ** ** *
  • Recommended - Verbally by providing the Jump to content code.

  • Assigning from **Curated Assignments. **

Important note: Teachers who are administering the baseline assessment in a monitored setting are advised to use assign with Jump to Content Codes followed by uploading the assignments to classes using Curated Assignments in order to view the report.

1. Assigning baseline assessment using Jump to Content codes

If you would like your learners to complete the assessment in a monitored setting, where they do not have access to the assessment before the scheduled time, then using Jump to Content is recommended. The other great benefit is that it is quick, and can be done without the learners being linked in a premium class.

Follow the following steps:

  1. Request learners to log-in.
  2. On their home page, learners must scroll down to the jump to content field as shown below.
  3. Learners must input the correct DAC-A-.... code as shown below
  4. And then click Go

Here are the baseline assessments codes per grade.

2. Assigning baseline assessment using Curated Assignments

Note: Following these steps will link the assignments to their dashboard. This not recommended as the first step if you want learners to complete this in a monitored setting, as learners will have access to the assignment before time. Only do this as step 2 so that you can view the assignment report.

Step 1: Go to your assignments page
  • On you menu panel, select Set work, and then click Assignments

Step 2: Select Siyavula Curated Assignments

Step 3: Select the desired assignment from the list

  • Filter the list by grade. This will help make your search list shorter.
  • Under Assignment, search the name of the assignment. For example typing the word Baseline will filter for only Baseline assessments.
  • Tick the box on the left to select the desired assignment

Step 4: Select the class and send

  • After selecting the assignment, scroll down to Choose the recipients
  • Filter your list by grade. This is grade level of the class that you are sending the assignment to.
  • You can also search by class name
  • Tick the box(es) on the left to select the classes
  • Click send

For teachers with premium access, note that the grade group (example Grade 9 Mathematics) is meant to have all learners in that particular grade. But it is advised that you select all the class names.

Caution: We currently do not have functionality to remove a sent assignment from the learners dashboards. Check your selection before clicking send.
