Consolidating with practice for mastery

How a teacher can instruct learners to Practice for Mastery on Siyavula

Practice for Mastery can be used to consolidate a topic once a section has been completed in class. Learners can take ownership of their own practice by setting practice goals and completing questions guided by the algorithm. Here questions are adaptive to an individual learner ensuring that each learner progresses at their own pace.

There are two ways in which teachers can instruct learners to practice for mastery:

  1. By clicking on Practice quick link on learner home page
  2. By using practice codes on the mastery tracking sheet

1. Practice on learner home page

Once a learner has logged on their learner home page, they can click on:

  • Practice for either Mathematics or Physical Sciences

On the practice dashboard, learners will see their progress on competed questions, collected atoms and achieved mastery stars. They can set their own weekly practice goals

You can also instruct learners to practice work from any grade by clicking on Choose different grade

The practice dashboard shows:

  • Topics, as aligned to the CAPS curriculum for the selected grade. Clicking on the topic will reveal the sub-sections.
  • Mastery progression as stars that illuminates as the learner gets answers correctly.
  • Mastery percentage for the chapters
  • Mastery percentage for the sections

To see the practice questions, a learner must click on the topic followed by the subsection that they want to practice. For example, click on 3. Finance to see the sub-sections under Finance topic, and click on 3.2 Future value annuities.

2. Mastery Tracking Sheets

Sharing practice codes from the mastery tracking sheet with learners

The mastery tracking sheet is a PDF document that is aligned to the Table of Contents in the learners' practice dashboard. Teachers can use this a quick way to assign practice for mastery using the practice codes for sub-sections. These PDF can be printed out for your learners to stick in their workbooks or files to record their Siyavula login details, Siyavula ID and to track mastery progress in chapters.

How learners practice using the practice codes

On the learner home page, learners must scroll down to Jump to content, type in the practice code and then click on Go. The first question will appear, allowing the learner to begin practicing, and move to the next question within the selected sub-section.
