The rules of the #1MillionMaths campaign

General rules

The competition will start on Friday 1 September 2023, and end on Saturday 30 September 2023.
Learners and teachers will have to opt in to #1MillionMaths, to be eligible for prizes.
If a learner has already opted in to be part of our national leaderboards, they will automatically be opted in to #1MillionMaths.
The competition will reward both Maths and Science practice.
To be eligible for a prize, learners must be in their correct grade.
Learners must be at school in Grades 8 - 12, to be eligible to enter #1MillionMaths.
To be eligible for a prize, a teacher/learner’s contact details must be up-to-date and correct.

Daily draw for learners

Any high school Mathematics or Physical Sciences learner at a school in South Africa is eligible to enter.
To be eligible for a prize, learners must be in their correct grade.
During September, any learner who earns a mastery star on Siyavula will be entered into the daily draw for that day. Prizewinners will be announced the following day.
There will be a daily draw for prizes each weekday of September.
Learners will receive one entry into the daily draw for each star earned in a day (e.g. if a learner earns three stars in a day, they will receive three entries into the daily draw).
Learners who have already achieved 100% mastery on Siyavula will have to complete 10 questions in a day to be entered into the daily draw. They will receive one entry for every 10 questions completed in a day (e.g. if they complete 20 questions in a day, they will receive two entries into the daily draw).
Learners will be informed if they have won a prize on the Siyavula website, and via email or sms.
Prizes will be awarded via a randomised draw.
Learners have until 31 October 2023 to claim their prize. Any prizes not claimed by this date will be forfeit.
Siyavula reserves the right not to award a prize each day.

Grade and school prizes

At the end of the campaign, prizes will be awarded to the top grades and schools for Mathematics (Grade 8 - 12) and Physical Sciences (Grade 10 - 12).
The grade winners will be those whose learners have earned the greatest number of atoms during September 2023.
School winners will be those schools whose Mathematics or Physical Sciences departments earn the highest number of atoms during September 2023.
Teachers may choose to opt in either specific grades or an entire department, or both.

Final showdown

Any learner who is in the Platinum League leaderboard on 22 September 2023 will be invited to join the final showdown.
Learners in the Platinum League will compete against one another in the final showdown.
Learners must be on the leaderboard for their correct grade, to take part in the final showdown.
These learners will be notified by sms or email on 25 September 2023, and invited to join the final showdown.
The final showdowns will take the form of a Siyavula assignment.
Learners will have multiple opportunities to complete the assignment on 26-27 September 2023.
It will remain the learner’s responsibility to ensure that their contact details are correct, so that they are able to join their final showdown timeously.
Learners will be required to complete as much of the assignment as they can within the time limit set.
If a learner completes the assignment more than once, their best results will count.
A prize will be awarded to the top three learners in the Platinum League, for their grade and subject (24 prizes: three per subject/grade).
Winners will be announced on 29 September 2023.
Siyavula reserves the right not to award a learner prize for a grade or subject.

By opting in to #1MillionMaths, you explicitly agree to have your first name, surname, school (where applicable), and leaderboard position displayed on a public leaderboard.
